Ascension Island is small and isolated, being only seven miles wide and lying in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, midway between Brazil and Angola at about 8 degrees South and 14 degrees West. Its nearest neighbour is the mother colony of St Helena, some 800 miles to the Southeast, of which it has been a dependancy since 1922. |
