The
Dutch explorer Van Langeren called at Ascension Islan in 1589, and
recorded details of bird-life. He published a book of his travels
ten years later and this contained the earliest known map of the island
drawn by Van Linschoten, but it was rather inaccurate. Later travellers
produced maps which were only a little more accurate.
